Keylor Navas Opens Up About Mental Struggles During PSG Experience
Keylor Navas Opens Up About Difficult Times at PSG
Paris, September 2025 — Former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) goalkeeper Keylor Navas recently shared his emotional struggles during his tenure with the French club. Now playing for Mexico’s Pumas UNAM, Navas reflects on the psychological challenges he faced after being sidelined.
Unexpected Transition at PSG
Upon joining PSG, Keylor Navas was the team’s primary goalkeeper. However, the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer of 2021 shifted his position to a backup role. This change significantly impacted Navas, who recently discussed this period on his YouTube channel, describing it as particularly challenging.
Mental vs. Physical Health
Navas emphasized that while his physical health remained robust, his mental state suffered greatly. “I know who I am, how I play, and I’m always physically fit,” he stated. “Mentally, I was struggling, but once I regained my mental and emotional balance, my body was ready. I knew I could train hard, give my best, and perform well in matches.”
Rediscovering Joy in Football
Navas found a renewed sense of purpose and happiness when he joined Argentina’s Newell’s Old Boys in January 2025. “Arriving in Argentina, I was truly excited because I felt ready to play again. I was at peace,” Navas shared. “The friendships I’ve made and the teammates I remain in contact with are what I cherish. It was about proving to myself that I could still play and enjoy football. Everyone benefited from this, including me.”
Limited Playtime at PSG
During his final seasons in Paris, Navas only played in eight matches across all competitions. This lack of playing time prompted a six-month loan to Nottingham Forest for the 2022-2023 season.
