As the Africa Cup of Nations wraps up and players return to their clubs, European leagues continue to showcase thrilling performances. Opta’s latest weekly ranking of the best clubs in Europe has been released.
European football delivered excitement this week across various leagues. From the Bundesliga to Ligue 1 and the Premier League, fans witnessed remarkable matches and surprising outcomes. In the Premier League, Michael Carrick’s debut as confirmed manager culminated in a 2-0 victory in the Manchester derby, allowing Arsenal to extend their lead at the top. However, the Gunners were held to a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest.
Meanwhile, in La Liga, Real Madrid secured a 2-0 win over Levante, while FC Barcelona faced a defeat after an impressive streak of 11 consecutive victories across all competitions. In the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich struggled against Wolfsburg, ending the first half at 1-1. The introduction of Michael Olise changed the game completely; with one goal and three assists, he led his team to a resounding 5-1 victory. In Ligue 1, both PSG and Marseille achieved straightforward wins, while Lens maintained their position at the top with a narrow 1-0 victory over Auxerre.
In Opta’s global club rankings, only a slight shift occurred, with Real Madrid dropping a spot. Overall, there were minimal changes in the standings.
