Title: “PSG’s Summer Transfers: Four New Faces but Is It Enough?”
With the departure of Kylian Mbappé, the summer transfer window for PSG promised to be highly eventful. However, the Parisian club ultimately secured only four signings—one for each position—to bolster their squad. So, has PSG truly benefited from these changes?
Known for their lavish spending, even during the tenures of stars like Neymar, Leo Messi, and Kylian Mbappé, PSG entered this summer transfer window in a dominant position. Surprisingly, the club did not focus heavily on finding a replacement for the French forward and instead adhered to its new recruitment strategy. With a total expenditure of €170 million, PSG has provided coach Luis Enrique with four valuable reinforcements.
A new goalkeeper and an added defender
First and foremost, PSG has initiated a transformation in the goalkeeper position by acquiring Matvey Safonov for €20 million. At this price, the Russian is expected to be more than just a backup, marking a wise decision by the club’s management to rejuvenate this position following the departures of Sergio Rico and Keylor Navas.
In defense, however, PSG has only brought in Willian Pacho for €50 million, despite this being a problematic area in the previous season. While Milan Skriniar remains with the club against management’s wishes to part ways, Danilo Pereira has left, and there is no new backup for Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi. In fact, Nordi Mukiele was even allowed to depart for Leverkusen. It’s fair to say that the club has not significantly strengthened this sector.
A new star in midfield, a gem in attack
On the other hand, PSG made a significant move in midfield by signing their top summer target, Joao Neves. The Portuguese player forms a magical trio alongside Vitinha and Warren Zaïre-Emery. However, Luis Enrique has lost several options from the bench due to the exits of Manuel Ugarte, Cher Ndour, Renato Sanches, Gabriel Moscardo, and Carlos Soler. It remains to be seen how the team will cope when one of these three outstanding players is unavailable, as the midfield may struggle with its lack of physical presence.
Finally, in the attacking department, PSG opted not to splurge on a seasoned forward. Instead, they welcomed Désiré Doué to strengthen this area, who could also contribute in midfield if necessary. Currently, Paris is enjoying the impressive performances of Bradley Barcola. Once again, the Champions League will serve as a critical test, especially for the Parisian attack, which is now missing Kylian Mbappé. It’s likely that adjustments will be required in the winter transfer window.
