The Unforgettable Flop: Nicolas Ouédec’s Brief Stint at PSG
Paris, 1998 – While the summer transfer window of 1998 is often remembered for the signing of Nigerian star Jay-Jay Okocha, it also marked the arrival of French striker Nicolas Ouédec at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Despite high expectations, Ouédec’s time at the club quickly turned into a forgotten chapter.
High hopes and a promising start
At 26, Ouédec joined PSG from Espanyol de Barcelona for a substantial fee of 40 million francs, approximately six million euros. This was a significant investment at the time, reflecting the club’s belief in his potential.
- Ouédec, a former FC Nantes star, was eager for success, declaring his desire to relive the European glory he had tasted with Nantes.

A disappointing tenure at the capital club
Despite his ambitions, Ouédec’s stint at PSG turned out to be underwhelming. In a total of fifteen appearances across all competitions, he managed to score just one goal, against Maccabi Haifa in the Cup Winners’ Cup.
- Although he added the Trophée des champions to his collection, his overall performance fell short of expectations.
An abrupt ending and a new beginning
The situation worsened following the replacement of head coach Alain Giresse with Portuguese manager Artur Jorge. Ouédec found himself marginalized and without a future at PSG.
- In January 1999, he was transferred to Montpellier, reuniting with Patrice Loko, who had joined the club on loan just two months prior.
