Safonov vs. Chevalier: PSG’s Goalkeeper Hierarchy Debate Intensifies
Safonov’s rise at PSG: A clear choice emerges?
Paris, January 28, 2026 — The football world was taken by surprise when Luis Enrique made a bold decision to start Matvey Safonov as the goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League match against Newcastle. This move, following Safonov’s return from a hand fracture, saw him replace Lucas Chevalier, signaling a potential shift in the goalkeeper hierarchy at PSG.
Safonov shines in crucial matches
Safonov’s selection was not a one-time decision. Just four days after the Newcastle match, he was again chosen for the Ligue 1 game against Racing Club de Strasbourg. Safonov’s performance was noteworthy, especially when he successfully saved a penalty, further solidifying his position as the team’s leading goalkeeper.
Luis Enrique remains cautious
Despite the apparent hierarchy, head coach Luis Enrique remains non-committal when questioned about the definitive ranking of his goalkeepers. "To make an assessment, it’s better to wait until the end of the season. I’m very happy to have three goalkeepers, each with their own strengths," Enrique commented during a press briefing ahead of the much-anticipated match against Olympique de Marseille.
Safonov vs. Chevalier: Opinions diverge
As the clash with OM approaches, Matvey Safonov is expected to start, with many seeing him as the more reliable choice for PSG. "In the current conditions, I find him much more reassuring for the team. His presence makes the goal seem smaller to opponents," remarked Lionel Charbonnier on RMC radio.
However, not everyone agrees with this assessment. Benoît Costil, a retired goalkeeper, has a different perspective. "He doesn’t have the stature of a top global goalkeeper. I see more potential in Lucas Chevalier. Safonov is far from the best on the global stage," Costil stated, offering a contrasting view on the developing competition between the two goalkeepers.
As the season progresses, the debate over PSG’s top goalkeeper continues, with both players eager to prove their worth and secure their place in the starting lineup.
