Safonov Posts ‘Clean Sheet’ on Instagram, Sparking PSG Goalkeeper Debate

Following Paris Saint-Germain’s draw against Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League on Wednesday night, Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov sparked conversations on social media with a provocative Instagram post.

Clean Sheets for Safonov

Matvey Safonov has made a strong impression since joining PSG, achieving two clean sheets in as many matches. In his debut last Saturday, he recorded two crucial saves against Stade Rennais in Ligue 1, and on Wednesday, he was called into action only once to comfortably catch a straightforward attempt from Asier Hierro in the 86th minute.

Following the match, shortly after midnight, the Russian international took to Instagram to share his excitement with a simple caption: “Clean Sheet”. This post has further fueled the ongoing debate regarding the competition between him and teammate Lucas Chevalier for the starting goalkeeper position.

Chevalier Still Injured

Lucas Chevalier, currently sidelined with an ankle injury, has seen his popularity wane among PSG fans, while Safonov appears to be winning over a significant portion of the supporter base. It remains to be seen how coach Luis Enrique will approach the situation upon Chevalier’s return, especially since he has consistently defended the French goalkeeper.

This Saturday, PSG is set to face FC Metz, who currently sit at the bottom of the French league table.
