Roberto De Zerbi on Marseille’s Unpredictability: “A Roller Coaster Team”
Roberto De Zerbi Reflects on Marseille’s Roller Coaster Performance
In a post-match press conference following a disappointing defeat at the Parc des Princes, Roberto De Zerbi described his team, Olympique de Marseille, as a “roller coaster,” highlighting their inconsistent performances. This assessment came after a heavy 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.
Inconsistency Plagues Marseille
De Zerbi noted that the team that took the field that night was far from the dominant squad that had recently triumphed over RC Lens and Stade Rennais. Instead, they resembled the version that succumbed to defeats against teams like Bruges, Liverpool, and Nantes. Upon entering the press room, he was quickly questioned about Marseille’s erratic form, a trend that he struggles to comprehend.
“There is no explanation. We played unacceptably, and we are not looking for excuses. This is the first time in my career that I have seen a team perform like a roller coaster,” De Zerbi stated, expressing his frustration to the gathered journalists. When probed further about the challenges he faces in conveying his tactical instructions to the players, he candidly replied, “That’s a good question, I don’t know.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the harsh critique of his team’s performance, De Zerbi remains hopeful about the future. He expressed disappointment but not despair, stating, “I am sad but not discouraged. We should not play like this; we should not lose in such a manner. Together with the management, we are always looking for solutions. We will discuss this as we do after every match, win or lose.”
