Rayan Cherki’s Next Move: Why Joining PSG May Not Be the Best Choice for Him
As Rayan Cherki faces an uncertain future following his departure from Lyon, the young talent is actively searching for a new club as the summer transfer window draws to a close. The 21-year-old, who recently earned a silver medal with the French national team at the Olympics, has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). However, experts suggest that this may not be the best decision for him.
Just a year after acquiring Bradley Barcola, PSG appeared set to sign another player from OL. A transfer deal for Cherki, reportedly worth €15 million, seemed almost finalized weeks ago. Yet, as it stands, the Lyonnais remains without a new destination, despite interest from various European clubs. The prospect of a renewed approach from PSG has been discussed, but is this truly the right path for either Cherki or the Parisian club?
Cherki’s Need for a Starting Role
In a recent commentary for Free Ligue 1, former player Rio Mavuba weighed in on the potential move to PSG, expressing concern for Cherki. He believes the highly-rated player would make a mistake by signing with the Paris club, as the level of competition may be too daunting for him at this stage in his career: “For Paris, it might seem appealing, but for Cherki, I wouldn’t advise going there. He needs to be in a club where he is guaranteed a starting position.”
The Case for a Less Challenging Club
Further elaborating on his viewpoint, Mavuba added, “Right now, no one can guarantee a starting role at PSG, and for Cherki, it’s even more uncertain. He needs to play at a club that isn’t as strong as PSG and continue developing his skills. At Paris, with the constant rotation of players, as seen with Barcola last season, I doubt Cherki would get the same opportunities. He should look for a team that will instill confidence in him, where he can play around 75% of the time. At PSG, that won’t happen.”
