PSG’s Unity Shaken: Safonov’s Frustration Sparks Internal Tensions

Paris, October 2025 — After months of harmony and success at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), a storm is brewing as Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov voices his dissatisfaction with his current role in the team. The unexpected outburst has thrown a spanner in the works for manager Luis Enrique, who now faces the challenge of resolving this internal conflict.

Safonov challenges his backup status

Matvey Safonov has publicly expressed his discontent regarding his position as a backup goalkeeper to Lucas Chevalier. Speaking candidly during a recent international break, Safonov hinted at a possible winter transfer, stating, “I’m not happy with the lack of playing time. Naturally, I want to play and prove my worth on the field.” This revelation has caused ripples within the club.

The Russian goalkeeper had anticipated a change in his situation following Gianluigi Donnarumma’s transfer to Manchester City earlier this year. However, the acquisition of Lucas Chevalier from Lille reshuffled the hierarchy, leaving Safonov on the sidelines. PSG attempted to offload Safonov last summer to accommodate Ukrainian defender Ilya Zabarnyi, aiming to avoid potential tension stemming from the geopolitical climate. In contrast, during international duty, he has found solace and was recently named captain against Iran, where he expressed gratitude towards his national team, saying, “I am thankful for the national team’s trust.
