PSG’s Midfield Struggles: Unrecognizable in Key Ligue 1 Clash Against Monaco
PSG’s midfield struggles: A red flag in Monaco
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) faced a challenging defeat against Monaco this past Saturday, with a narrow 1-0 loss. This setback threatens their position as the leader in Ligue 1. Although Olympique de Marseille failed to capitalize on this opportunity to surpass PSG, Racing Club de Lens showed no hesitation in taking advantage.
Divergent performances in different competitions
PSG’s performance in the domestic league contrasts sharply with their Champions League campaign, where they currently hold the second spot in the group stage. This discrepancy raises questions about their consistency. Are they strategically choosing which matches to prioritize? This topic sparked debate on Monday evening’s episode of “L’After Foot.”
Sports journalist Daniel Riolo disagreed with the notion of deliberate match selection. He remarked, “To say they choose their matches, you would have to be sure they do it consciously, and I am not convinced. The team’s professionalism has been proven, and coach Luis Enrique is known for his strictness, leaving little room for complacency among the players.”
Concerns over PSG’s midfield
The midfield, in particular, drew criticism from Riolo, who compared the players’ poor performance to unrecognizable versions of themselves. “I saw Joao Neves’ brother, Vitinha’s sibling, and Fabian Ruiz’s distant cousin on Saturday at Louis-II,” he quipped. “Witnessing these three midfielders play so poorly is shocking. Kvaratskhelia is a clear example of a player with two faces. But are they aware of their inconsistent performances? I’m inclined to believe it’s more of a mental burnout.”
This week, PSG has a break from the Champions League. The reigning European champions are set to host Stade Rennais on Saturday at Parc des Princes for their 15th Ligue 1 match of the season.
