PSG’s Historic Triumph: “A jamais les meilleurs” Replaces Marseille’s Myth
In a remarkable display of strength on the continental stage, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has shattered long-standing beliefs in European football, leaving a legendary former player in awe and prompting him to propose a new motto that challenges the legacy of their arch-rival, Olympique de Marseille.
The end of a 32-year reign
For over three decades, the phrase “Forever the first” was the proud motto of Olympique de Marseille. This slogan celebrated their historic triumph over AC Milan (1-0) in the 1993 UEFA Champions League final, making them the only French club to have lifted the prestigious trophy. The club and its supporters reveled in this exclusive honor, being the trailblazers of French football on the European stage.
However, this narrative was dramatically altered following PSG’s emphatic victory over Inter Milan (5-0) this past May. The Parisian club not only joined Marseille in the elite circle of European champions but also set a new benchmark by achieving the largest winning margin ever witnessed in a Champions League final.
A new slogan emerges
Antoine Kombouaré, a former defender and coach for PSG, was an eyewitness to this spectacular performance and remains deeply impressed by the team’s achievement. He believes that PSG deserves its own distinctive slogan to commemorate this historic feat.
“While Marseille boasts ‘Forever the first,’ our mantra is undeniably ‘Forever the best.’ Securing a 5-0 win in a Champions League final—no one has done that before. No one. And I was there to witness it,” Kombouaré shared in an interview with M6.
This sentiment reflects the shifting dynamics in French football as PSG’s recent success redefines the narrative, challenging Marseille’s long-held position as the sole French champions in the highest echelons of European football.
