PSG’s Historic Champions League Win Sparks Debate on Ligue 1’s Competitiveness
On May 31, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) achieved a historic milestone by securing their first UEFA Champions League title. Alongside this prestigious victory, the club also celebrated a domestic treble. However, despite their success, foreign supporters continue to criticize the competitiveness of Ligue 1 and the challenges faced by the Parisians. In response, the president of PSG addressed these concerns.
Under the guidance of Luis Enrique, PSG has enjoyed a flawless season. The team clinched every national title available, including the Trophée des Champions, Coupe de France, and Ligue 1, before decisively defeating Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final, marking their first European championship.
Despite this impressive performance and a challenging campaign, PSG has faced significant criticism regarding the perceived lack of competition in Ligue 1. This dissatisfaction did not sit well with Nasser al-Khelaïfi, who responded to these remarks after the victory: “It is easier to score goals in La Liga than in Ligue 1,” he asserted, defending the league’s integrity.
A message for English observers as well
After PSG’s victories over several English clubs during their Champions League run, Al-Khelaïfi also had a message for Premier League fans: “Luis Enrique proudly represented Ligue 1 and defended it against Premier League supporters who labeled it the Farmers League. We ended up defeating Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal in the Champions League,” he boasted.
