PSG Wins Amid Controversy: VAR Decision Sparks Lille Outrage
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured their third consecutive victory in Ligue 1 on Sunday, triumphing over Lille OSC (1-3) in a match that saw controversy surrounding a disallowed goal. The turning point came when Tiago Santos’s potential equalizer was ruled offside after a VAR review, leaving Lille players and fans questioning the officiating decisions.
PSG Emerges Victorious Amid Controversy
In what was expected to be their first significant challenge of the season, PSG managed to clinch the three points against Lille. The players under coach Luis Enrique left northern France with a win, but the atmosphere was charged with outrage from Lille supporters. They felt that the VAR intervention to annul Santos’s equalizing goal should have stood, igniting a heated debate over the officiating.
“The Final Result Is Distorted”
After the match, Olivier Létang, president of LOSC, took to the mixed zone to express his displeasure. He stated, “The second goal being disallowed is the major frustration of the evening. Initially, I was unaware. This is the defining moment of the match. We invest millions in video technology to ensure correct decisions are made. The referee, Mr. Bastien, confirmed that Thomas Meunier’s touch on the ball played a role in Santos’s offside position. I am very upset about this. Yes, we made mistakes, and yes, we played against a strong team. But the central issue is that with eight minutes remaining, we should have been at 2-2, with Lille pressing hard. The final result is distorted; the integrity of the championship is compromised despite having the technological tools to make the right calls. Yet, those decisions are not being made. This must be emphasized,” he remarked.
“VAR Needs to Do Its Job”
In a post-match interview with DAZN and during the press conference, Bruno Génésio, the coach of LOSC, also weighed in on the contentious incident. He commented, “When Benji (Benjamin André) heads the ball, it might seem like Tiago (Santos) is offside, but Thomas Meunier touches the ball in the meantime, altering its path. Consequently, there should be no offside for Tiago Santos. The VAR must fulfill its role. If the VAR is in place and doesn’t serve a purpose, then why have it at all? I have no issues with Mr. Bastien, but I am baffled by what the people in the VAR room were watching. Another match? A movie? I don’t know.”
