PSG Wins Amid Controversy: Tiago Santos’ Offside Goal Confirmed
In a highly contentious finish to the match between Lille OSC and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), the spotlight turned to Tiago Santos’ equalizing goal, which was ultimately disallowed due to an offside call. The match concluded with PSG triumphing 3-1, but the debate surrounding the disallowed goal lingered. Amaury Delerue, the new head of refereeing for Ligue 1, has since clarified that Santos was indeed offside.
PSG stands out as the only team in Ligue 1 to have won all three of their opening matches this season. With a total of 9 points, they currently sit atop the French league table. However, their recent encounter with Lille stirred controversy over what many believed to be a legitimate equalizer from Tiago Santos.
“It’s very contentious”
Following the match, Lille’s coach, Bruno Genesio, expressed his frustration: “It’s tough and it’s very contentious. VAR needs to do its job. If we’re going to have VAR but it doesn’t serve a purpose, we might as well not have it at all. I have no complaints about Mr. Bastien, but I don’t know what the people in the VAR bus were watching. Another match, a movie? I have no idea.”
“The image is conclusive, the player is offside”
In an interview with Le Parisien, Amaury Delerue confirmed the offside ruling on Lille’s equalizing goal: “We wanted to review the footage as it should have been during the match. At the moment Thomas Meunier deflected the ball to Thiago Santos, the image is clear: the player is offside. The reality of the footage confirms that the decision was correct. There was a hasty assessment by the video assistant, who did not factor in the deflection from Meunier on the ball’s trajectory. This created a new context for interpreting offside, meaning the VAR process was not fully adhered to at that moment. The ball is in the net, and we have time for this decision.”
