PSG Held to Draw by Reims: First Stumble of the Season

This past Saturday evening, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) faced their first setback of the season, drawing 1-1 against a resilient Stade de Reims. This marked the first stalemate for Luis Enrique’s squad, who have historically struggled against the Reims side. Following the match, Reims defender Emmanuel Agbadou expressed his pride in the team’s performance against the Parisian giants.

The PSG encountered a significant roadblock. Despite a strong start to the season, the capital club had already shown some vulnerabilities in their midweek Champions League match against Gérone, which they lost 1-0. Anticipated to bounce back on Saturday at the Stade de Reims, Paris ultimately settled for a draw in their first match of the 2024-2025 season (1-1).

Reims proves to be a tough opponent for PSG

While this result is disappointing for the Parisians, they remain at the top of Ligue 1 standings. Conversely, Reims demonstrated yet another commendable performance against the dominant force of France. Last season, the Reims team had already held PSG to a draw (2-2) at the Parc des Princes on March 10. However, Paris had previously triumphed at Auguste-Delaune in November 2023, with a spectacular hat-trick from Kylian Mbappé. Nonetheless, Reims consistently challenges PSG, which brought a smile to Agbadou’s face.

“There’s a certain motivation against this team”

“Yes, I would say it’s a continuation of the last two years I’ve spent here. I believe we’ve faced PSG five times and lost only once. The rest of the matches have ended in draws,” remarked the Ivorian defender after the match on Saturday evening. “There’s a certain motivation against this team. We will try to build on that. There’s pride in keeping them to just one goal over 90 minutes; we need to commend the guys for that.”
