PSG Held to Draw by Newcastle, Misses Top 8 Spot in Champions League Qualification
Paris Saint-Germain’s draw against Newcastle on Wednesday at Parc des Princes (1-1) has cost them a direct spot in the Top 8, which would have guaranteed qualification for the knockout stages. Following the match, coach Luis Enrique shared insights into the reasons behind this setback.
From the moment the draw for the group stage was made, Paris Saint-Germain knew that securing direct qualification for the Round of 16 would be challenging. Although they started their European campaign strong, the Parisians have only managed to gather two points from their last three Champions League matches, a disappointing outcome that ultimately cost them a place in the Top 8.
Luis Enrique attributed this disappointment largely to the demanding schedule faced by PSG. “It’s the calendar and the wonderful group we have,” he remarked during the press conference. “If you analyze all the matches we’ve played against the teams we’ve faced, it’s catastrophic to see the level of those teams. Newcastle was part of Pot 4. […] Just look at the types of matches other teams have had, they are so different.“
A blessing in disguise
Enrique’s observations were validated by the results of the group stage. Among the eight teams PSG faced, only Athletic Bilbao failed to qualify. Four of the other teams secured their spots directly in the Round of 16.
Despite the frustration, the former FC Barcelona coach also highlighted the silver lining: “When you consistently play against top-level teams, you become better prepared for the upcoming playoffs and matches ahead.” The European champions will defend their title in the playoffs set to commence in February, potentially facing AS Monaco or Qarabag.
