PSG Faces Goal-Scoring Challenge Without Mbappé This Season
As the current season unfolds, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) finds itself without its star player, Kylian Mbappé, who has made a move to Real Madrid. The French forward was known for his remarkable ability to score in almost every match he played. Unfortunately for the Parisian club, a new prolific scorer has yet to emerge. Hopes were high for Ousmane Dembélé, who has shown improved performance this season; however, insights from Jérôme Rothen suggest that he may not reach the milestone of 25 goals.
Dembélé’s Promising Start
Ousmane Dembélé has indeed made a strong start to the season with PSG. The former FC Barcelona player has already outscored his tally from the entire 2023-2024 season and has demonstrated a greater efficiency in front of goal, even though he occasionally slips into old habits.
Dembélé Hasn’t Become a Goal Machine
This season, coach Luis Enrique initially planned to rely on Gonçalo Ramos. However, with Ramos sidelined due to injury, Enrique has been forced to explore alternative strategies to boost goal-scoring. Jérôme Rothen commented in his show Rothen s’enflamme on RMC Sport, noting: “When Gonçalo Ramos returns and is fit, will he play? Or will Luis Enrique stick with his false number 9, which I find problematic, especially at Parc des Princes? Because the false number 9 requires a strong Barcola, who we saw in the first two or three matches, and/or a decisive Dembélé.”
“We Can’t Expect Him to Score 25 Goals”
While Ousmane Dembélé has been finding the back of the net more regularly this season, he hasn’t magically transformed into a goal-scoring machine overnight. The 27-year-old winger is expected to contribute significantly to the scoreline, but Rothen cautions against unrealistic expectations: “Looking at Dembélé’s career, we can’t expect him to score 25 goals in a year, even with solid statistics this season. Therefore, it is essential to have a number 9 who can put the ball in the net. I’m curious to see how Luis Enrique will integrate Gonçalo Ramos into this team.”
