Pernod Ricard Cancels PSG Deal Amid Marseille Backlash

A surprising controversy has erupted in Marseille this week surrounding Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and its recent partnership with Pernod Ricard, a major player in the global spirits market. In a sudden turn of events, the CEO of the beverage group announced on Thursday that they would be retracting the agreement.

Marseille reacts to the partnership

The proposed collaboration between Pernod Ricard and PSG faced significant backlash from the residents of Marseille. The announcement stirred unrest in the city, particularly because the spirits company’s image is closely tied to Marseille. This prompted Benoît Payan, the city’s mayor, to publicly express his discontent. Ultimately, Pernod Ricard announced on Thursday that it would not proceed with sponsoring PSG.

“A heartfelt decision”

In an official statement, Alexandre Ricard, the CEO of the company, explained his reasoning: “I made this decision for the Group, listening to those who contribute to its success—our employees in France, our clients, and our shareholders, especially my family. For over 90 years, Ricard’s history has been intertwined with Marseille, the city that birthed, nurtured, and inspired us. This connection is stronger than anything else. Today, I am making a heartfelt decision. I trust that those who worked on this project will understand my choice. Pernod Ricard will proudly continue to celebrate its roots and the genuine ties that connect our brands to their communities.

Family legacy questioned

Throughout the week, several influential voices spoke up against the deal, including Lorraine Ricard, the granddaughter of Paul Ricard and daughter of Patrick Ricard. She highlighted the deep connection between the family business and Olympique de Marseille (OM), stating, “In 2012, the banner of OM supporters, raised after my father Patrick’s passing, deeply touched us. Marseille never forgets its children. Yet, today, the company seems to have forgotten this tribute and its origins by signing a partnership with PSG. When business betrays its roots, it tarnishes its history and risks its future.
