OM Surpasses PSG in Popularity as 2025 Champions League Final Ratings Drop
Paris, June 2025 — In a surprising turn, the audience ratings for the 2025 UEFA Champions League final featuring Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were significantly lower compared to the iconic 1993 final with Olympique de Marseille (OM). This has raised questions about the enduring popularity of OM over PSG in France.
PSG’s commanding win draws millions
Last Saturday, M6 broadcasted the highly anticipated final where PSG dominated Inter Milan with a 5-0 victory. The match was watched by 8.67 million viewers on the network, as reported by Médiamétrie. This represented 39.9% of the total audience aged 4 and above, and 48.8% of women under 50 responsible for purchases. Additionally, Canal+ drew 2.85 million subscribers, with an extra 262,000 tuning in via Canal+ Foot. In total, 11.78 million people watched the match, marking a historic moment for the Parisian club.
High prime-time viewership
In terms of prime-time viewership, 54.2% of the television audience tuned in to watch the game. This strong performance allowed M6 and Canal+ to lead the evening’s ratings. However, expectations for even higher numbers may not have been met.
OM’s legendary 1993 final outshines
In stark contrast, the 1993 final where Olympique de Marseille faced AC Milan was viewed by over 15.2 million people on TF1, achieving a market share of 62.6%. The match was broadcast on a Wednesday evening, underscoring its massive appeal at the time.
Comparisons with recent finals
Moreover, the 2020 final featuring PSG against Bayern Munich, also aired on TF1, attracted 11.4 million viewers, capturing 46.2% of the audience share. These comparisons highlight the enduring allure of Marseille’s historic victory.
