Messi’s Struggles at PSG: Leonardo Reveals the Challenges Faced by the Star
Messi’s transition to PSG: A difficult journey
In 2021, Lionel Messi, the renowned Argentine captain, made a surprising move to Paris Saint-Germain after spending two decades at FC Barcelona. Despite his high-profile transfer, Messi struggled to make a lasting impact at the Parc des Princes over two seasons, before moving to Inter Miami in 2023.
Why the Messi-PSG partnership faltered
During the summer of 2021, PSG’s then-sporting director, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, successfully persuaded Messi to join the club following his departure from Barcelona. The addition of Messi to an attacking line-up featuring Kylian Mbappé and Neymar created one of Europe’s most formidable trios. Despite their star power, PSG couldn’t find their footing on the European stage. While Messi helped secure two consecutive Ligue 1 titles, the team failed to progress beyond the Champions League Round of 16.
Personal struggles and departure
Messi faced numerous challenges during his stint in Paris. A breakdown in his relationship with PSG fans contributed to his decision to leave and join David Beckham’s Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Leonardo shares insights into Messi’s time at PSG.
Leonardo on Messi’s struggles
Leonardo, who served as PSG’s sporting director from 2019 to 2022, played a pivotal role in bringing Messi to the club. Reflecting on Messi’s turbulent time in Paris, Leonardo shared with RMC Sport: “Messi initially wanted to remain at Barcelona. But once it became clear that staying wasn’t an option, PSG became his top choice. Despite this, numerous misunderstandings arose. It was a tough period for him, having to relocate after 20 years in one place. Saying he was unhappy is an oversimplification. The Champions League elimination by Real Madrid in 2021-2022 added to the complexity.”
