Mbappé Leaves PSG for Real Madrid Amid Promised Transfers Failures
The summer transfer window of 2024 has been notably shaped by the departure of Kylian Mbappé from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). After seven seasons in the French capital, the superstar has opted to join Real Madrid, a club that has pursued him for years. One of the key factors behind his exit was the club’s failure to fulfill promises made to him during the transfer talks, particularly regarding the arrivals of Bernardo Silva and Robert Lewandowski.
Historically, since the acquisition by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), PSG has been known for attracting high-profile stars. However, the club seems to be shifting its strategy away from extravagant spending on marquee players. This change is exemplified by Mbappé’s departure this summer, which was not followed by a direct replacement in the attacking line.
Mbappé’s Disappointment Over Promised Signings
Despite the potential for a different outcome, it appears that PSG could have retained Kylian Mbappé in their squad, alongside two other prominent stars. According to reports, the French forward felt betrayed during the summer of 2022 when the club failed to uphold its commitments regarding transfers. PSG had assured him of the signings of Robert Lewandowski and Bernardo Silva, but neither player made the move to Paris, leaving the former AS Monaco player frustrated.
A Focus on Youth in Recruitment
Moving forward, it seems that PSG is aiming to embrace a youth-centric approach in its roster. This summer, the club made headlines by signing the talented Désiré Doué (19 years old) for approximately €60 million. In addition, Luis Campos successfully secured Joao Neves (19 years old) from Benfica Lisbon for a total of €70 million, including bonuses, as he is regarded as one of the best young players globally. Furthermore, PSG has bolstered its defense with the acquisitions of Willian Pacho (22 years old) and Matvey Safonov (25 years old), who will serve as a goalkeeper.
