Matvey Safonov Shines Again with Penalty Save in Strasbourg vs PSG Match
During the match between Strasbourg and PSG on October 22, 2023, Matvey Safonov made headlines by saving a penalty kick from Joaquin Panichelli. This impressive feat echoed his previous standout performance in a penalty shootout against Flamengo during the Intercontinental Cup.
Safonov’s Exceptional Save
In Strasbourg, Matvey Safonov delivered the crucial save that many had hoped to see from Lucas Chevalier all season long. The Russian goalkeeper not only stopped Panichelli’s penalty but also witnessed Mayulu score shortly after, giving PSG the lead at La Meinau. “He has an uncanny ability to predict which way the shooter will strike,” commented Luis Enrique after the match. “Throughout my career, I’ve encountered many excellent penalty savers, but I believe he is the best in this regard,” added the Spanish coach.
Statistical Dominance
The statistics back up the 55-year-old tactician’s praise. This season, Safonov has successfully saved five out of the seven penalties he faced, including shootouts, marking the highest total among goalkeepers in the top five European leagues, as noted by Opta. Notably, he showcased his skills in the Intercontinental Cup final in late December, where he saved four Flamengo attempts during the shootout, despite fracturing his hand on one of the stops. After a month-long absence, Safonov appears to have reclaimed his position as the first-choice goalkeeper, having impressed in matches against Newcastle and Strasbourg upon his return. While Luis Enrique has not publicly acknowledged it, a shift in hierarchy seems apparent.
