Luis Enrique’s Press Conference Highlights Ahead of PSG’s Match Against Auxerre
On Thursday, in Poissy, Luis Enrique held a press conference ahead of PSG’s match against Auxerre for the 19th round of Ligue 1.
Despite a recent defeat in the Champions League, Luis Enrique expressed his pride and confidence in his players once more. Speaking to journalists in Poissy for about half an hour before PSG’s trip to Auxerre tomorrow at 8:00 PM, the Spanish manager responded to questions with a mix of humor and a clear stance: he stands firmly by his squad.
Luis Enrique’s Press Conference Before Auxerre
Why is he confident for the second half of the season?
“You can see the number of goals scored this season compared to last year. Four more than last year, which is incredible. Last year was not bad. We have four points less than last year, and RC Lens has won their last ten matches. They deserve to be at the top of Ligue 1. Analyzing this “special” season, we are in a very good moment. In the Champions League, with the toughest draw of all teams, we are in a privileged position. Not bad.”
Is Lucas Chevalier decisive enough?
“The first thing I want to tell a player when we sign them is, ‘Be careful, during your first year here, you will be criticized no matter what you do.’ This happened with Bradley (Barcola) and Désiré (Doué). This year, we signed three players, and integrating into the team’s dynamic is challenging. It’s typical when joining a team at this level. I repeat, I am very happy with what I have seen from my new players, but they can still improve. That’s the normal dynamic in a team of this caliber. Regarding doubts among teammates? None. No doubt. We are all together: the club, supporters, team, players, staff… Our goal will be beautiful. What I saw against Sporting was very good. That is what I think.”
Has Achraf Hakimi returned to training and will he be available tomorrow?
“It depends on today’s training session. I want to speak with him because it’s important to know how he feels individually. He is back and in normal condition. He has a minor physical issue but nothing major. Tomorrow, maybe yes, maybe no. That will be my decision.”
Is it good news not having to play in the Champions League playoffs?
“You seek solutions, but you never find them (laughs). We try to respect your opinion. But I cannot share that. You don’t have 50% of the information I have. The playoffs? That’s what I think. I’m not sure. It’s not by chance. If I think about the workload, it’s important to be at 100%, but at the same time, injuries happen during matches. We won’t play four Cup matches. I prefer to win the next match and be in the top 8 in the Champions League, but physically, I have no doubts.”
Is he annoyed by individuality?
“No. I’m sorry, but I get annoyed and frustrated during the match, not with my players. I am very proud of how we played and prepared for the match. I have no problems or complaints with my players. Mistakes are part of football.”
Is a turning point against Manchester City last year important?
“I don’t know. It’s very difficult to have such a moment. Last year, we didn’t know we could win. Today, the players know we can, and other teams know we can win again, which is the best thing possible.”
How does he explain PSG’s mixed results and performances since December?
“There are many reasons. Everyone can look for the reason they want. In my opinion, this year is special. We have talked about this many times. But it’s true that even today, January 22, we have played only one match with the ‘starting’ team. That was the first match of the season, and the players were at 50%. We must value that. In our Champions League group, and if we look at the standings, there are six clubs aiming to be at the top. It’s extraordinary this season, despite the criticisms of our players.”
Ibrahim Mbaye returns as an African champion
“These are complicated moments, but it’s a normal thing this season. Achraf and ‘Ibé’ returning is very positive. I’m very happy for him as he’s only 17. He has experience, having played a lot this season and last year as well. The AFCON was significant for his maturity. He has shown he has the level. I’m glad he’s back, along with Achraf Hakimi.”
The upcoming match against AJ Auxerre
“These are always complicated matches. They are in a delicate position in the standings. Typically, this type of match will face a low block. There will be neither space nor time. We need to be clear-headed; it will be difficult. We are used to this type of challenge, and it will be complicated. We need to be attentive and precise.”
