Luis Enrique’s Influence on PSG Fans: Allegations of Cult-like Following
Controversy surrounds PSG’s Luis Enrique amid Champions League struggles
Paris, October 2024 – Following a disappointing 1-2 defeat against Atlético Madrid at the Parc des Princes, Paris Saint-Germain finds itself in a precarious position in the UEFA Champions League. Despite the setback, head coach Luis Enrique has largely escaped criticism for the team’s tumultuous European campaign.
Media backlash against Luis Enrique
However, not everyone is withholding judgement. Prominent sports journalist Daniel Riolo is vocally critical of the Spanish coach. “He’s captivated 80% of PSG fans and 70% of the media,” Riolo remarked on RMC. “It’s reminiscent of Mourinho’s era, where he could build a devoted following. People follow him like he’s a political leader. No matter what he does, they continue to support him.”
Accusations of creating a ‘cult-like’ following
Riolo suggests that Enrique’s influence is akin to forming a cult, comparing it to the fervent support seen during Mourinho’s peak years. This notion stems from Enrique’s past successes, notably leading FC Barcelona to a Champions League victory in 2015. However, Riolo points out that “back then, players like Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta, Neymar, Suarez, and Messi were at their peak.” He argues that since then, Enrique’s subsequent performances with Barcelona and the Spanish national team have been underwhelming.
The uncertain future of Luis Enrique at PSG
Despite Riolo’s critique, PSG has yet to officially comment on extending Enrique’s contract. The club’s leadership may be waiting for a more opportune moment, possibly following a significant victory, to make an announcement.
