On Saturday evening, during the match against Le Havre at Parc des Princes, PSG’s coach Luis Enrique made an unexpected decision by starting Nuno Mendes as the left-back. This choice was surprising since the Portuguese player was just returning from an injury.

João Neves, another Portuguese talent, also featured in the starting lineup and continued to impress by scoring a goal — his sixth in nine matches across all competitions this season.

Enrique’s humorous blunder

When asked about Neves’ scoring prowess, the Spanish manager amusingly confused the players. “Nuno Mendes has evolved over these two years from a more lateral position… Oh, you’re talking about João Neves? See, I’m tired!” Enrique chuckled during the press conference.

João Neves shines as a goal scorer

Once the confusion was cleared, Enrique praised Neves’ growing abilities: “I remember he told us he wasn’t a scorer, yet he has a lot of potential. He’s very young and has faced criticism, which is normal in a career. But his development is clear, and we’re happy to see his goal-scoring capability.”

João Neves is now just one goal shy of his tally from the previous season, in which he played 59 matches. The Tavira native’s impressive form is becoming a pivotal asset for PSG.
