Luis Enrique Reflects on Matvey Safonov's Injury: "It's Karma" Before Cup Match

As Paris Saint-Germain prepares for their Coupe de France match against Vendée Fontenay in Nantes, Luis Enrique addressed the media in Poissy.

In a significant blow to the team, goalkeeper Matvey Safonov has been ruled out for three to four weeks due to a hand fracture sustained during Wednesday’s intercontinental cup final against Flamengo. Safonov had recently been in top form, making four consecutive starts, but will now miss crucial matches that could impact his position against Lucas Chevalier.

“We are not sure how it happened,” Luis Enrique stated during the press conference. “We believe it occurred during the third penalty kick against Flamengo; he made a strange movement. He has a fracture, but with the adrenaline and emotions, he was able to stop the subsequent penalties without feeling pain.“

When asked about the psychological impact on his goalkeeper, Enrique elaborated: “It’s karma. I haven’t spoken to him yet, but he has played four outstanding matches with us, and now his body is telling him to rest. He needs to accept this, and with his mentality, he will come back faster than usual.“

Safonov will not be available for the upcoming match against Fontenay in the Coupe de France, likely making way for either Lucas Chevalier or new signing Renato Marin.
