Luis Enrique Discusses Guardiola's Influence Ahead of Key PSG vs. City Match

As Luis Enrique prepares to face Xavi’s Barcelona, he reflects on his connection to Pep Guardiola and the evolution of Catalan football.

During his latest Champions League press conference, Luis Enrique found himself once again compared to Pep Guardiola, a recurring theme whenever he faces Barcelona. The question arises: Who truly embodies Catalan football? Enrique’s response this time diverged from previous comparisons with Xavi.

“In my view, Guardiola’s 4-3-3 was the blueprint that led to the perfect model for Barcelona. He is a number one coach, unique in his approach, and has innovated the game. He is certainly a reference point for many. I’m fortunate to call him a friend. He has introduced a completely different way of playing…. It has opened doors for many coaches after him. I focus on the ball… It’s a very Spanish pun,” Enrique told journalists.

Is the match against City the most important of the year?

While Ousmane Dembélé asserted that the upcoming match against Manchester City is the most significant one he will play for PSG, Enrique held a different perspective.

“I hope the most important match of this season isn’t the one against City, but rather one that comes later in the competition, where we would be contesting a title. That’s my hope—that we play other very important matches. This one is special, and with the new format of the Champions League, no one could have predicted that City and PSG would end up with this many points by the seventh matchday. Today, we still don’t know how many points we need to qualify. After this matchday, it’s possible we will find out,” he explained.
