Linette Calls for More Competition in Ligue 1 Amid PSG Dominance
The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) continues to dominate Ligue 1, a situation that has sparked concerns from Cyril Linette, a candidate for the presidency of the Professional Football League (LFP). Linette, the former head of PMU and L’Equipe, is advocating for increased competition within French football, which he believes is essential for the league’s health. His comments, however, have evidently ruffled feathers at the current champions of France.
The contest for the LFP presidency is heating up between Cyril Linette and Vincent Labrune. Linette, who has a background with L’Equipe and Canal +, has secured the partnerships needed to run for the position and has been actively campaigning, making numerous media appearances. Notably, he was featured on the After Foot program on RMC this Wednesday evening, where he outlined his vision for enhancing the competitiveness of French football.
Linette bemoans PSG’s dominance
Linette argues that PSG’s overwhelming control over the league is detrimental. “We need competition in French football. The issue is with PSG’s excessive dominance,” he stated. His remarks prompted a swift reaction from PSG, as sports commentator Daniel Riolo revealed the club’s displeasure during a broadcast.
PSG retaliates against Linette
According to Riolo, the PSG management is quite upset about Linette’s comments regarding their dominance. “I’ve received significant messages. PSG is very angry about Cyril Linette’s remarks on their overwhelming control. They don’t understand? Indeed, they comprehend nothing. What they conveyed was clear—they believe it’s only problematic when PSG is on top, yet in many leagues, Manchester City has claimed six of the last seven titles,” Riolo shared on RMC. He added, “They are furious. They fail to see that more rivalry benefits PSG, and they simply don’t get it. They are extremely upset; it’s astonishing the messages I’ve received.”
