Le Trophée des Champions: A Minor Title Struggling for Relevance in January

The Trophée des Champions once marked the beginning of the season, similar to England’s Community Shield. Now held in January, its significance has dwindled further within the club calendar.

The Trophée des Champions, often viewed as a mere formality, was established in 1995 and has never commanded much respect—considered a secondary trophy aimed at appeasing sponsors. Since 2009, the match has been hosted abroad, and this year it takes place in Kuwait. According to journalist Bruno Blanzat, Marseille supporters are planning to boycott the match. Despite the OM covering travel expenses, fans would still need to pay around €150. The prospect of facing PSG at such a distance also fails to excite many.

A First Classic Win for OM This Season at the Vélodrome

This will be the second “Classic” encounter between France’s biggest rivals in the 2025-2026 season. The first match, held at the Vélodrome in September, saw Marseille emerge victorious. A third clash is slated for the Parc des Princes in Ligue 1 during the weekend of February 8. However, it is expected that Marseille fans will be banned from traveling to that match.
