Kombouaré Slams Ligue 1 TV Rights Shift: “A Huge Loss for Football”
The contentious issue of television rights for Ligue 1 has sparked significant debate, stirring unrest among top French football clubs. Last Friday, Antoine Kombouaré, the head coach of FC Nantes, voiced his frustrations during a powerful press conference. He criticized the absence of match broadcasts on the historic Canal+ channel, a sentiment that echoes the growing unease surrounding the coverage of the league’s games.
Since the beginning of the current Ligue 1 season, DAZN has secured the broadcasting rights, but the subscription fees have raised eyebrows and drawn criticism. During a press conference on Friday, Kombouaré did not hold back his displeasure regarding Canal+’s exclusion from the broadcasting landscape, delivering a passionate outburst that resonated with many football enthusiasts.
A Significant Loss for Football
“I am from the Canal+ generation. For me, it is a loss to have lost a great partner. Canal+ is not just a broadcaster; it feels like family. I can’t imagine Canal+ without Ligue 1 or Ligue 1 without Canal+. It’s absurd, it’s a big mistake, in my words,” lamented Antoine Kombouaré, emphasizing his deep connection to the channel.
An Unmatched Legacy
“I know what I’m talking about. When it comes to TV rights and the quality of service, Canal+ has always highlighted Ligue 1 and worked tirelessly to elevate it to a recognized championship. Today, not having Canal+ is a huge loss for French football. No matter which broadcaster comes in, they cannot compete with Canal+. Forty years of presence cannot be replaced just like that; it’s impossible. The expertise, the skills, the analysts… this is a huge loss, both professionally and emotionally,” Kombouaré continued.
He concluded by stating, “I will subscribe to DAZN. I have no choice, as I must lead by example, and it’s part of my job.”
