It’s no secret that Johan Micoud harbors critical views on Kylian Mbappé. The former French international seizes every chance to critique the French captain when the opportunity arises.

On Monday evening, Kylian Mbappé was notably absent from the Châtelet Theatre in Paris during the Ballon d’Or France Football ceremony. Despite his club’s deliberate boycott, the Real Madrid forward remained a hot topic.

Ranked seventh by voters worldwide, Mbappé once again proved his mettle by securing a spot in the Ballon d’Or top 10, a feat he has achieved annually since his breakthrough in 2017. However, Johan Micoud did not support this ranking.

Micoud critiques Mbappé’s high ranking

During a discussion on L’Equipe du Soir, where panelists shared their most surprising results, Johan Micoud first expressed disappointment over the 11th place of Barcelona’s Pedri, criticizing the Champions League’s heavy influence on voters’ decisions.

Yet, the 2000 European champion couldn’t resist a jab at Kylian Mbappé, declaring he couldn’t understand how the forward ended up so high in the rankings. While journalist Régis Testelin reminded Micoud that Mbappé was the Golden Boot winner, Micoud pointed out that, despite the scoring coefficient favoring the Frenchman, it was the Swede Viktor Gyökeres who finished as Europe’s top scorer.
