João Neves: Exceptional Talent Shines in PSG’s 2024-2025 Season
João Neves: A standout performer in his inaugural season with PSG
In August, Paris Saint-Germain secured the signing of João Neves from Benfica Lisbon for a significant fee of sixty million euros, including ten million in bonuses. The Portuguese player has emerged as one of the top acquisitions of PSG’s summer transfer window, alongside Willian Pacho.
During the initial phase of the 2024-2025 season, coach Luis Enrique has frequently relied on the versatile player from Tavira. Neves has participated in 26 matches across all competitions, contributing two goals, and has distinguished himself with his adaptability on the field.
João Neves: a rare versatility
“I initially saw him as a number 6, staying just in front of the defense, shirt tucked in, not venturing out,” commented sports analyst Kevin Diaz on RMC. “Yet, here he is, playing left-back, number 10, and more. He scores goals, he’s phenomenal and only 20 years old. It’s incredible.”
According to statistics from the CIES Football Observatory, João Neves stands out as the top player under 21 in terms of goal opportunities created globally. With a performance index of 91.9, he surpasses Mario Stroeykens from RSC Anderlecht (83.4) and Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace (79.2). In Ligue 1, he leads the table of assist providers, with six assists to his name.
