Daniel Riolo Criticizes Ligue 1 for Favoring PSG with Schedule Changes
PSG’s controversial schedule change sparks debate
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has found itself at the center of controversy following a schedule alteration intended to benefit their Champions League ambitions. The adjustment, which grants the team extra recovery time ahead of their clash with Chelsea, is being criticized by some in the football community.
PSG vs Chelsea: A strategic advantage?
The Parisian giants are set to face Chelsea on March 11 and 17 in the Champions League’s round of 16. To ensure optimal preparation, PSG has been allocated five rest days between the home game at Parc des Princes and the away match at Stamford Bridge. This advantage comes after the postponement of their match against FC Nantes, originally scheduled for March 15.
Backlash from French football circles
Not everyone is pleased with this schedule change. Daniel Riolo, a well-known sports commentator, has voiced strong criticism against what he sees as an unfair advantage for PSG. During a sports talk show, Riolo argued that this move does not benefit other teams, particularly FC Nantes, who are struggling in 17th place and fighting to avoid relegation.
A question of fairness
“If you help a team, that’s fine, but not at the expense of another,” Riolo remarked, highlighting the potential strain on Nantes’ schedule. He emphasized that the Ligue 1 calendar was reduced to 18 teams and the League Cup was abolished to avoid such situations. Yet, he believes this decision showcases a submission to PSG’s needs by other clubs.
“It’s pure submission,” Riolo continued, expressing disbelief at the ease with which PSG’s needs were accommodated. He criticized the other Ligue 1 clubs for seemingly bending over backwards without resistance, suggesting that such actions undermine the competitive nature of the league.
