Safonov’s Precarious Position: Competing for PSG Starting Spot
Safonov’s challenge in the Champions League
Last Tuesday, Matvei Safonov was once again chosen as the starting goalkeeper by Luis Enrique for a crucial match. In the first leg of the Champions League playoffs against AS Monaco, the Russian goalkeeper faced a tough start.
Left exposed by his defense within the first minute, the former Krasnodar player had to retrieve the ball from the back of the net twice by the 18th minute. However, the match calmed down after Paris Saint-Germain managed to stage a comeback.
Safonov addresses competition for starting spot
After the game, Safonov discussed the competition for the goalkeeper position. “It’s definitely a challenging situation. Although I’ve been playing more in recent matches, it doesn’t guarantee my place in future games. I need to keep working hard to secure my spot for the next match,” he stated in the mixed zone.
No fixed hierarchy for goalkeepers, says Luis Enrique
This Saturday, PSG will face FC Metz at Parc des Princes for the 23rd day of Ligue 1. Luis Enrique might consider giving Lucas Chevalier some playing time during this game.
When asked about the goalkeeper hierarchy, the Spanish coach usually deflects the question. “We are open to anything that can improve the team. There is no fixed hierarchy or numbers 1, 2, and 3. I’m always looking to enhance the team,” he explained last week in a press conference.
