Illia Zabarnyi Struggles at PSG: Luis Enrique Defends Player Amid Criticism
Illia Zabarnyi, who started alongside Pacho, faced significant challenges against Stade Rennais in a 3-1 defeat. Despite criticism, manager Luis Enrique defended the player in a press conference, citing the need for adaptation.
Zabarnyi’s second consecutive start did not go smoothly. The young defender, signed for €60 million from Bournemouth, has struggled to find his footing with Paris Saint-Germain. Throughout the match against Stade Rennais, he appeared uncertain, particularly struggling with the speed of opponents Al Tamari and Nordin, leading to a disappointing performance.
Criticism has circulated on social media and in the press. Le Parisien described him as a player who seemed “overwhelmed.” In a harsher critique on L’After Foot on RMC, former MLS defender Maxime Chanot advised, “If I were Luis Enrique, I would take Zabarnyi and send him to the reserves. He’s making too many mistakes.”
A Need for Adaptation
When asked about Zabarnyi’s poor performance, Luis Enrique defended him, emphasizing the adjustment period required for new players. He stated, “I disagree with you. You mentioned a month ago that we are often precise in our signings and that the difficulty of adaptation is real. I am not worried about our summer recruits. It’s challenging to adapt quickly,” reinforcing the notion that at just 23 years old, this is Zabarnyi’s first experience at a major European club.
