Hugo Gatti Critiques Messi’s Legacy: "He Played Easy Football" Amid GOAT Debate
As Lionel Messi thrives with Inter Miami, an unexpected critique has emerged from a former Boca Juniors player in Argentina.
Despite securing the World Cup title with Argentina, Messi’s status as the greatest of all time (GOAT) remains a topic of debate among some football circles. The latest to voice skepticism is Hugo Orlando Gatti, a legendary goalkeeper from Boca Juniors known for his 417 appearances with the club. In a recent interview with La Nacion, Gatti did not hold back on his views regarding Messi.
Gatti’s Critique of Messi’s Footballing Journey
Gatti expressed his opinions by stating, “I don’t hate Messi, but he has played in a very easy football environment. I watched him at Barcelona, where he would draw fouls at every turn, and he had a top team playing for him.“
The goalkeeper also made a direct comparison between Messi and his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo: “Cristiano, despite his limitations, is a phenomenon. Even if he is not as skilled as Messi, he has played for the best teams in the world. It takes more courage to face those challenges. Where has Messi played? Only at Barcelona and with the Argentine national team. He hasn’t dared to try his luck with other teams in different countries.” This comment seemingly overlooks Messi’s time at Paris Saint-Germain.
Gatti didn’t stop there. He further criticized Messi’s performance in the 2022 World Cup, suggesting that “his opponents didn’t even challenge him. In football, if you are allowed to play freely, as Alfredo Di Stefano said, you can shine every day. Di Stefano ranked Messi behind Pelé. They criticized Maradona, but he fought through challenges and got back up. Messi, on the other hand, tends to stay down when touched.“
He concluded with a strong remark regarding Messi’s current career path: “Today, he is playing football in America, which is akin to playing in a country league.” Gatti’s interview has sparked significant conversation, showcasing the ongoing debate regarding Messi’s legacy in the world of football.
