From PSG to OM: Adrien Rabiot’s Unthinkable Transfer Journey

In the world of football, the phrase “never say never” holds a significant truth, as demonstrated by Adrien Rabiot’s recent career developments. After several years donning the Paris Saint-Germain jersey, the talented midfielder is set to join Olympique de Marseille. This move is particularly surprising considering that just a few years ago, the 29-year-old declared it would be impossible for him to ever become a Marseillais.

As the summer transfer window closed on August 30 in France, clubs in Ligue 1 still have the opportunity to sign free agents, and Rabiot is at the forefront of this activity. Following five successful seasons with Juventus, he is poised to make the switch to OM, pending a successful medical examination, as confirmed by the club on Sunday evening.

“Losing to Marseille is a blemish for all supporters”

Since the announcement of Rabiot’s impending transfer to OM, some of his past comments made during his time at PSG have resurfaced. In a 2016 interview with La Provence, he discussed the fierce rivalry between the two clubs, which were set to clash in the Coupe de France final (a match that ended in a 4-2 victory for Paris). Rabiot stated, “This match is special. It’s Marseille. For a Parisian, there is a unique rivalry. It’s important for our supporters; it’s the north against the south. For them, if there is a match to win, it’s that one… Losing to Marseille is a blemish for all supporters. It’s the same for me. Everyone I meet on the street reminds me how crucial it is for them. They know I am Parisian at heart, that I represent them, and that this matters to me. It is even more significant for the young players trained here. We have always had this rivalry.”

“For me, it was not conceivable”

During the same interview, Rabiot reflected on the interest Olympique de Marseille showed in him back in 2013. At that time, he firmly stated that wearing the Marseille colors was out of the question. He recounted, “For me, it was not conceivable. Initially, I discussed it with my family and brothers; I even thought it was a joke. Playing for Marseille is unimaginable.” When pressed by the journalist about the possibility of wearing the Marseille jersey in the future, Rabiot emphatically replied, “No, that is not possible.” Clearly, much has changed since those days.
