French Clubs Shine in Champions League and Europa League, Boosting UEFA Ranking
French clubs enjoyed a successful week in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, with Olympique Lyonnais’ victory and Lille’s draw helping maintain France’s lead in the UEFA rankings.
During the Champions League and Europa League playoffs, Dutch teams achieved commendable results, posing a risk to France’s fifth-place standing in the UEFA index. However, following the first leg of the Round of 16 matches this week, the threat has largely dissipated. With Lyon’s impressive win (1-3) and Lille’s draw (1-1), French clubs gained a crucial 0.429 points in the rankings.

Unfortunately for Paris Saint-Germain, they failed to contribute any points due to their narrow loss against Liverpool (0-1). The Netherlands saw their chances of gaining points nearly obliterated due to dismal performances. In the Champions League, PSV Eindhoven suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Arsenal (1-7) and appears to be on the verge of elimination. Feyenoord Rotterdam also faces bleak prospects after losing at home to Inter Milan (0-2).
A Final Hope in the Europa League?
With these setbacks, the Netherlands has very little chance of reclaiming the fifth spot from France. However, there remains a glimmer of hope in the Europa League. Despite Ajax Amsterdam’s defeat at home against Eintracht Frankfurt (1-2), AZ Alkmaar managed to restore some pride for Dutch clubs with a victory over Tottenham (1-0).
If AZ were to win the competition, they could potentially add 3 points to the UEFA index for the Netherlands, but this would require all French teams to be eliminated in the Round of 16 next week. Given Lyon’s recent success, this scenario seems unlikely.
