Lucas Chevalier Urged to Leave PSG Amidst Struggles and World Cup Snub
Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas Chevalier faces uncertain future amid challenging 2025-2026 season
Paris, March 2026 – Lucas Chevalier’s first season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is proving to be a struggle. Expected to take over from Gianluigi Donnarumma, the French goalkeeper, who was acquired from LOSC Lille for a hefty €55 million, has found himself pushed down the pecking order by competing goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.
Chevalier’s limited playtime at PSG has had repercussions at the national level. Initially the third-choice goalkeeper for France, he ultimately lost his spot to Robin Risser for the 2026 World Cup squad. As the summer transfer window approaches, Chevalier may consider leaving Paris to preserve his career prospects—a move also advocated by footballing legend Jean-Pierre Papin.
A fresh start on the horizon for Chevalier
Jean-Pierre Papin, the former Olympique de Marseille striker, believes that Chevalier must quickly seek new opportunities to revive his career. „Missing the World Cup and watching PSG potentially win the Champions League could be a heavy blow for him,“ commented Papin on RMC Radio. He emphasized the importance of resilience and suggested that Chevalier should actively seek a new challenge to avoid a career downturn.
Papin hinted that Chevalier has lost control over his career trajectory at PSG. „The starting spot is never guaranteed—Safonov has been sidelined by injuries before,“ he remarked. „However, you can’t build a career waiting for the first-choice goalkeeper to get injured,“ added the 1991 Ballon d’Or winner.
With his future at PSG uncertain, Chevalier may need to consider a transfer to continue his development and regain his place in the national team. As the summer transfer window looms, the young goalkeeper faces a pivotal decision in his professional journey.
