De Zerbi Criticizes PSG’s “False Classic” but Praises Luis Enrique’s Vision
Marseille, France – March 2025: In the heated rivalry between Olympique de Marseille (OM) and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), emotions run high, and pride is fiercely defended. Despite suffering two significant defeats this season, Roberto De Zerbi, OM’s coach, has not shied away from speaking his mind about the Parisian giants.
De Zerbi challenges the PSG dominance
The confrontations with PSG are more than just games for Marseille; they are battles of honor. This season saw OM fall to PSG twice, with scores of 3-0 and 3-1. However, De Zerbi remains defiant. In a recent press conference, he criticized PSG’s financial and sporting dominance, while grudgingly acknowledging their strengths.
“I am proud not to be part of the power team,” De Zerbi stated, highlighting the perceived imbalance in French football. He insisted that “OM remains the most important club in the country,” despite the challenges. The coach reflected on the last nine matches, where OM managed only two goals against PSG, calling into question the nature of this so-called “Classic.”
Open acknowledgment of the current disparity
De Zerbi did not deny the current disparity between the teams. “In recent matches, the level is clear: PSG is ahead. But honesty is better than deceit,” he explained. He compared the rivalry to other famous football face-offs like El Clásico and Boca-River, where victories are more evenly distributed. His candid admission stands out in a rivalry often clouded by ego-driven narratives.
An unexpected tribute to Luis Enrique
Interestingly, while De Zerbi critiques PSG, he also admires their coach, Luis Enrique. “My project is to create a team with a soul, like Luis Enrique’s in Paris. He has built a unified group with a singular vision,” De Zerbi conceded. This unexpected praise highlights a respect for Enrique’s long-term vision and patience in team building.
With OM sitting second in Ligue 1 and eager to return to the prestigious Champions League, De Zerbi is focused on the future. “Next season, the first date I will look for is the match in Paris. That’s the encounter I want to win,” he declared boldly. It is an ambitious goal for a coach determined to prove Marseille can be more than just an underdog.
