DAZN vs LFP: Legal Battle Unveils Deep Rift Over TV Rights and Piracy Issues
Legal showdown ignites between DAZN and French Football League
Paris, February 2025 – The initial courtroom skirmish between DAZN and the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has unfolded into a fierce dispute, marked by accusations and heightened tensions. The LFP is demanding the release of 35 million euros in withheld TV rights fees, while DAZN counters by alleging contract violations. This legal clash is set to be intense, with both sides determined to prevail.
An electrifying atmosphere from the start
The proceedings, led by Judge Patrick Sayer, quickly delved into the core issues, showcasing the significant divide between the parties. DAZN revealed it has 500,000 subscribers in France and argued that the funds were withheld due to inadequate anti-piracy measures by the LFP. The LFP, in turn, contended that it had fulfilled all contractual obligations and criticized the surge in piracy since DAZN’s arrival, citing its 40-euro monthly subscription fee compared to Amazon’s previous 14-euro rate via Prime.
Piracy emerges as a critical point of contention
Piracy has surfaced as a pivotal concern in this legal battle. DAZN accuses the LFP of failing to manage distribution networks effectively, pointing to foreign broadcasts accessible in France through beIN Sports. Meanwhile, the LFP highlighted its consistent requests for international broadcasters to block French bank cards. DAZN deemed these measures insufficient, asserting that no broadcaster could ensure a foolproof solution to piracy.
DAZN and LFP: an irreparable rupture
The heated exchanges and mutual accusations underscored an undeniable truth: the rift between DAZN and the LFP appears irreparable. DAZN, investing 400 million euros per season and over 2 billion in total, maintains that exclusivity is crucial to preserving the value of its offerings. With the LFP remaining steadfast, this conflict shows no signs of resolution. One thing is certain: all strategies are now on the table.
